Het leven van een topsporter is ook zeker een fulltimebaan. Dit wordt helaas door veel mensen onderschat. Laura Dijkema is professioneel volleybalster en laat zien dat er voor- en nadelen aan topsport zitten. Van begrafenissen missen omdat je in het buitenland zit tot de kick die je krijgt tijdens het maken van een punt in een belangrijke wedstrijd.
Wie of wat is jouw grootste inspiratie?
Het klinkt heel cliché, maar dat zijn mijn ouders. Mijn vader was altijd een enorm gedreven ondernemer en een echte doorzetter. Ook in zijn ziekteproces bleef hij nieuwe doelen stellen en daarvoor gaan. Mijn moeder is na het overlijden van m’n vader ook zo sterk gebleven. Daarnaast waren ze super flexibel en steunden ze mij altijd op een positieve manier in mijn volleybalpassie: ze haalden me op van school om meteen naar de training te brengen… ze hebben heel wat uurtjes in de auto gezeten zodat ik kon trainen. Dat doorzetten en die positiviteit heeft me enorm geïnspireerd!
Was het altijd al je droom om professioneel volleybalster te worden?
Nee, eigenlijk is het echt een uit de hand gelopen hobby. Ik was wel een fanatiek en energiek kind. Ik zat naast volleybal op tennis, jazz-dance en speelde muziekinstrumenten. Het kon niet gek genoeg! Ik vond tennis vroeger eigenlijk altijd leuker, maar na een arm-breuk kon ik eerder weer volleyballen dan een tennisracket vasthouden – en zo ben ik doorgegaan met volleybal!
Stel je was geen professioneel volleybalster geworden, wat had je dan willen doen?
Deze vind ik lastig. Ik ben na mijn VWO een studie psychologie begonnen, maar de praktijkvakken waren niet meer te combineren met het volleyballen. Toch zou ik nu echt geen psycholoog meer willen worden. Ook heb ik een bevlieging gehad om stewardess te worden… maar daar ben ik ook van terug gekomen na al het reizen wat ik met het volleyballen doe ;-). Ik zie mij in de toekomst wel in de sportmarketing werken of iets met sport en (sociale) media. Daarnaast hoop ik natuurlijk mijn kledinglijn uit te kunnen breiden!

Wat wordt er onderschat met betrekking tot topsport en hoe heb jij dit ervaren?
In Nederland wordt topsport nog wel eens onderschat. Ik krijg vaak de vraag: “oké dus je volleybalt en wat doe je voor werk of studie?”. En dat terwijl het een fulltime job is waarbij je hele leven in het teken staat van de sport. Wanneer ik de vergelijking maak met profvoetballers, dan snappen de meeste mensen het wel. 😉 Je lichaam is je instrument dus je moet fit zijn. Dat houdt in altijd gezond eten en goed je rust pakken. Ik woon 9 maanden per jaar in het buitenland voor het clubseizoen (komend seizoen speel ik in Kaliningrad, Rusland) en wanneer ik in Nederland ben dan start het interlandseizoen met Oranje. Met het Nederlands team spelen we veel toernooien (kwalificaties, nations league, EK of WK) in een zomer, waardoor we veel moeten reizen. Ik mis dus veel gebeurtenissen zoals verjaardagen, geboortes en bruiloften. Het meest pijnlijke vind ik wel dat ik bijvoorbeeld begrafenissen heb gemist omdat ik in het buitenland zat. Ik ben een sociaal dier, maar moet mijn contacten vooral via de telefoon onderhouden.
Stoppen???
Topsport bevat ook zeker veel tegenslagen als je keihard gewerkt hebt voor een belangrijke wedstrijd en dan toch verliest. Ik vraag me af of Laura ooit overwogen heeft om te stoppen. Laura: “Nee, ik heb nog nooit overwogen om echt te stoppen. Ik vind het spelletje gewoon nog té leuk. Ik had wel als doel om de Olympische Spelen van 2020 te halen en daarna verder te kijken… toen we ons niet kwalificeerden voor Tokio had ik wel even de tijd voor een momentje van bezinning. Ik heb voor mezelf besloten dat ik gewoon jaar voor jaar bekijk hoe ik erin sta en zolang ik het nog leuk vind en van waarde kan zijn voor teams (club en Oranje), ga ik lekker door!”
Wat vind jij het leukste als je in het veld staat? Wat geeft jou nou echt een kick?
Het geeft me echt een kick om belangrijke wedstrijden te spelen, do or die wedstrijden, finales met veel publiek… en wanneer je dan ook nog eens lekker staat te spelen en het publiek achter je staat! Daarvoor maak je al die trainingsuren! Een van mijn mooiste herinneringen is de halve finale van het EK2015 in Rotterdam. Heel Ahoy zat vol met meer dan 10.000 mensen in Oranje en dat moment dat we het punt binnen sloegen om naar de finale te gaan… toen voelde ik die energie van de tribunes afspatten, echt WAUW!

Hoe ziet jouw routine eruit voor een belangrijke wedstrijd?
‘S ochtends hebben we vaak een ochtendtraining, daarna lunch en even tijd voor een powernap. Ik probeer wel altijd even 30 min te slapen of uit te rusten zodat je lichaam en hoofd even kan opladen. Voor de wedstrijd heb ik mijn vaste make-up en haar-ritueel met een lekker muziekje op, dan nog een snackie en gaan!
Wat is jouw grootste leermoment tot nu toe?
Prestaties in het verleden bieden geen garanties in de toekomst! In 2017 heb ik een tijdje geen club gehad. Op het EK2017 werd ik benoemd tot best Setter van Europa en tegelijkertijd besloot mijn club in Italië een andere setter aan te trekken omdat ze een andere kant op wilden gaan. Op dat moment zat ik in de beste vorm van mijn carrière en toch zonder club… daardoor besefte ik me wel hoe hard de topsport wereld is. Je bent voor de clubs vaak gewoon een gebruiksmiddel om hun doelen te halen. Gelukkig kon ik in januari aan de bak bij Firenze en heb ik daar daarna 3 mooie jaren gehad. Een geluk bij een ongeluk ;-). In ieder geval ben ik hierdoor nóg meer in het moment gaan leven en gewoon te genieten.

Naast elke dag bezig te zijn met volleybal heeft Laura ook nog der handen vol met een eigen kledinglijn. Hoe is ze nou op het idee gekomen om “XIV by Laura” te starten? Laura: “Via social media krijg ik vaak de vraag van fans of ik een trainingsshirt of wedstrijdshirt over heb. Helaas zijn wij geen voetballers en krijgen wij niet voor iedere wedstrijd een nieuw tenue, dus is dat simpelweg niet mogelijk. Ik heb altijd een liefde en passie voor fashion gehad en daarnaast wou ik graag wat terug doen voor de fans…. En zo is XIV by Laura ontstaan. XIV staat voor 14, mijn rugnummer. Het idee is om een lifestyle sportlijn te ontwikkelen voor jong en oud.”
Hoe is deze start verlopen en hoe bevalt het ondernemerschap?
Ik ben XIV by Laura gestart met twee vriendinnen die mij heel goed ondersteunen. Wij doen alle verzendingen zelf, dus wanneer ik in het buitenland zit dan pakken zij dat op. We hebben onlangs de zomercollectie 2020 gelanceerd en die is onwijs goed ontvangen. Binnen een dag waren sommige items al compleet uitverkocht en dat had ik echt niet verwacht! Ik leer er echt super veel van: van webshopbeheer tot douaneformulieren invullen voor bestellingen uit Amerika. Bij iedere bestelling krijgt de klant een handtekening en een persoonlijke boodschap. Daarnaast vervullen we ook de customer service voor vragen over de kleding of bestellingen… tijdrovend bijbaantje naast het trainen, maar het geeft super veel energie wanneer ik alle positieve reacties hoor!

Blijf vooral bij je zelf en maak kleding waar je zelf achter staat, alleen dan kan je er met volle energie en passie invliegen!
