Uitgedaagd worden om je eigen gedachten te vormen en vooral ook om die op een deugdelijke wijze te onderbouwen is iets wat Eva Vlaardingerbroek fantastisch vindt. Ze is opiniemaker, rechtsfilosoof en docent/onderzoeker aan de Universiteit van Leiden. Eva durft te spreken over gevoelige onderwerpen en kritische vragen te stellen, maar wordt hierdoor niet altijd gewaardeerd.
Wie of wat is jouw grootste inspiratie?
Oef, ik vind dit altijd een lastige vraag. Er zijn veel mensen en dingen die mij inspireren…Mensen die ik ken, niet ken en nooit had kunnen kennen, maar ook kunst en muziek kan mij erg raken. Als ik één karaktereigenschap moet noemen die de mensen die mij inspireren verbindt, dan is dat: eigenzinnigheid.

Haar studie ervaring
Eva heeft eerst Rechten gestuurd aan de Universiteit van Utrecht. Mijn vraag aan haar is hoe ze deze opleiding heeft ervaren? Eva: “Mijn tijd aan de Universiteit Utrecht was niet de leukste tijd uit mijn leven. Zowel sociaal als academisch voelde ik me niet zo thuis in Utrecht. Ik vond de studie rechten niet heel spannend en de politieke correctheid aan de UU vond ik enorm verstikkend. Sommige onderwerpen kon je gewoon niet over praten zonder door zowel je medestudenten als je docenten raar aangekeken te worden of zelfs vrij vijandig “gecorrigeerd” te worden. Kritische vragen stellen bij bijvoorbeeld het functioneren van de Europese Unie, immigratie en Islam werd niet gewaardeerd. Docenten kwamen dan vaak met dooddoeners als: “als je dat vindt, dan heb je het niet goed begrepen.” Terwijl ik dan dacht: “ik begrijp het heel goed, maar ik ben het gewoon niet met u eens.””
Rechten aan de Universiteit van Utrecht
Na deze ervaring zou je denken dat Eva niet meer verder gaat met studeren maar toch kiest ze ervoor om een master te gaan doen aan de Universiteit van Leiden. Hoe is dit haar bevallen? Eva: “Na mijn bachelor ben ik naar Leiden gegaan om de master Encyclopedie en Filosofie van het Recht te gaan studeren omdat ik de vragen “waarom is de wet zo en zou de wet wel zo moeten zijn?” veel interessanter vind dan “wat is de wet?”. Die master vond ik fantastisch. Daar word je écht uitgedaagd om je eigen gedachten te vormen, maar vooral ook om die op een deugdelijke wijze te onderbouwen.”

Je geeft nu les aan de Universiteit van Leiden. Wat vind jij het uitdagendste aan deze baan?
Klopt, maar door Corona is alles nu anders dan normaal. Onderwijs gaat online. Het uitdagends toen ik nog voor de klas stond was om eerstejaars rechtenstudenten te motiveren voor rechtsfilosofische vraagstukken.
Een opiniemaker is iemand die de maatschappelijke meningsvorming beïnvloedt. Wat maakt jou nou een opiniemaker?
Haha, ja daar heb je me. Beïnvloed ik de maatschappelijke meningsvorming wel genoeg? Dat is natuurlijk maar de vraag, maar ik merk dat er toch veel mensen zijn die dezelfde dingen denken als ik, maar uit angst voor sociale gevolgen zich stilhouden of bijvoorbeeld alleen anoniem op Twitter hun mening durven te uiten. Ik probeer in het publieke debat de zorgen van dat soort mensen een plek te geven. Ik begrijp namelijk heel goed dat niet iedereen dat aandurft. Heb je een “rechtse” mening en ga je tegen de social justice warriors in dan loop je het risico dat mensen je te pas en te onpas uitmaken voor “racist”, “fascist” “xenofoob” en zelfs “nazi”. Ik krijg dat soort dingen constant naar mijn hoofd, maar dat is nog niet eens het ergste. Je krijgt ook te maken met dingen als cancel culture, bijvoorbeeld dat mensen je werkgever bellen om te eisen dat je ontslagen moet worden, of dat mensen vinden dat je niet zou moeten worden uitgenodigd voor debatten en interviews bijvoorbeeld. Deze mensen staan simpelweg niet open voor gesprek, maar willen mensen met een andere mening het zwijgen opleggen.

Heel goed! Ik zou niet meer anders willen.
Wat draag/droeg jij bij aan Forum voor Democratie?
Vorig jaar heb ik 5 maanden stagegelopen bij FvD in het Europees Parlement en nu ben ik actief lid.
Je hebt in een toespraak op het partijcongres van Forum voor Democratie jezelf gekeerd tegen het hedendaags feminisme. Wat is jouw mening daar over?
Exact wat ik heb gezegd in die toespraak. Ik denk dat het hedendaags feminisme niet meer gaat om echte vrouwenrechten, want die hebben wij simpelweg in het Westen al. Maar het hedendaags feminisme, creëert als het ware telkens nieuwe problemen en denkt heel erg vanuit slachtofferschap. Zij delen de wereld dan ook in, in slachtoffers en één onderdrukker, namelijk: minderheden + vrouwen slachtoffer zijn van blanke mannen. Ik geloof daar totaal niet in. Hier in het Westen krijgt iedereen de kans zichzelf te ontwikkelen, je moet de kansen alleen wel grijpen en bereid zijn hard te werken. In andere delen van de wereld, waar vrouwenrechten wél onder druk staan of zelfs non-existent zijn, daar hebben die hedendaagse “feministen” het dan weer niet over. Ze zeggen tegen het patriarchaat te zijn, maar zien geen probleem in de immigratie van alleenstaande mannen uit veel patriarchale samenlevingen dan de onze, zoals uit delen van het Midden-Oosten of Afrika. Ik vind dat hypocriet en onverstandig. Maar toen ik me daar in die speech dus over uitsprak werd ik meteen gelabeld als “dienstmaagd van radicaal rechts”, “Arisch prinsesje” en nog veel meer nare termen. En dit werd gewoon gezegd door columnisten van een “kwaliteitskrant” als de Volkskrant. Zie je wat ik bedoel? Deze mensen willen helemaal geen gesprek, ze willen je wegzetten als fout en je daarmee buiten spel zetten.

Hoe bereid je jezelf voor op zo’n toespraak?
Ik heb de speech een paar keer hard op geoefend, zodat je zeker weet dat je niet over bepaalde zinnen of woorden struikelt. Veel meer kan je eigenlijk niet doen. Ik was zenuwachtig tot ik m’n eerste woorden had uitgesproken, haha.
Je krijgt ook door onder andere twitter veel online haat over je heen. Hoe weet je hiermee om te gaan?
Je huid wordt dikker met de tijd en met de aanvallen. Sommige dingen die me vroeger erg zouden hebben geraakt, doen dat nu niet meer. Ik probeer er zo min mogelijk aandacht aan te besteden, maar soms als het echt de spuigaten uitloopt ga ik terug in de aanval. Je hoeft ook niet alles gewoon maar over je heen te laten komen, al helemaal niet als het “vooraanstaande figuren” zijn die onwaarheden over je verspreiden bijvoorbeeld. En als de haat echt bedreigend van aard is of zeer lasterlijk bijvoorbeeld, dan doe ik aangifte.
Wat zijn jouw doelen voor de toekomst?
Een nog veel luidere stem worden in het publieke debat en me volledig inzetten voor waar ik in geloof.
Eva haar inspirerende tips voor mensen die nog niet weten wat ze later willen gaan doen:
- Als ik twijfel welke keuze ik moet maken dan ga ik er met zoveel mogelijk mensen over praten. Als je vast blijft zitten in je eigen hoofd dan kom je er meestal niet uit. Vraag mensen die je bewondert en die jou kennen om advies.
- Breng in kaart wat je leuk vindt en wat je beste
eigenschappen zijn, wat voor loopbaan past daarbij? - Wees niet bang of hetgeen wat jij leuk vindt wel genoeg geld oplevert of wel “cool” genoeg is. Als je écht goed wordt in je vak, wat het ook is, dan volgt de rest vanzelf.
